Why I Started The Graceful Rituals Company or: what happens when you finally stop.
Updated: May 11
There was a moment, not dramatic, not cinematic, when I just stopped.
Not by choice, exactly. More like my body made the decision before my mind caught up. I was in the thick of perimenopause, juggling a career, and if you’ve been there, you’ll know that “thick of it” doesn’t quite cover it. The brain fog that makes you lose your sentence halfway through a meeting. The exhaustion that lives in your bones but has to be hidden because you have things to deliver, deadlines to meet, a professional face to put on. The stress that used to feel manageable now sits on your chest like something heavy that won’t shift.
And underneath all of it, the strange, unsettling experience of looking in the mirror and not quite recognising the person looking back.
I didn’t feel like myself. I felt like a shadow of her.
The hardest part wasn’t the symptoms. It was the silence around them. I’d be sitting in a meeting, mid-sentence, and the word would just vanish. Gone. I’d smile through it, move on, go home and feel quietly devastated. I’d mention how I was feeling to people around me and be met with blank faces, well-meaning but unhelpful suggestions, or the kind of breezy reassurance that made me feel more alone. “You’re probably just tired.” “Everyone gets stressed.” “Have you tried going to bed earlier?”
Nobody really understood. And I didn’t know how to explain something I barely understood myself.
The Fast-Paced Life
I’d been moving fast for years, achieving things, showing up, keeping all the plates spinning across work and life and everything in between. And then perimenopause quietly dismantled my ability to do any of that without cost. The tiredness couldn’t be slept away. The brain fog lifted some days and descended on others with no warning. My skin changed. My moods changed. My relationship with my own body changed. Everything I’d taken for granted about who I was felt suddenly uncertain.
I was grieving a version of myself while still being expected to perform as her.
I think a lot of women know this feeling. We just don’t always say it out loud because the world doesn’t leave much space for it.
Listening to My Body
So I started paying attention. Not to the noise—God knows there was enough of that—but to what my body was actually asking for.
I became more conscious of what I was putting on my skin. Reading labels. Questioning ingredients. Realising how many products I’d been using without a second thought were full of chemicals I couldn’t name and certainly hadn’t chosen. If I was trying to nourish myself, I wanted what I put on my body to actually mean something. Certified organic. Clean. Simple. Honest.
And then there was the question of what I was putting in my body. Supplements became part of my world not as a magic fix, but as another act of nourishment, to give my body the extra boost that it needed. A way of giving my body what it needed during a season when it was working so hard just to keep me upright.
I also found meditation. Or perhaps it found me. Those small pockets of stillness—even five minutes, even imperfect—became non-negotiable. Not because some app told me to, but because they were the only moments in the day that felt truly mine. Moments where I could just breathe, exist, and not be required to produce anything.
These things—the skincare, the supplements, the stillness—started to weave together into something that felt like care. Real care. The kind I’d been giving everyone else for years but had somehow forgotten to give myself.
The Exhaustion of Searching
But finding my way to all of it was exhausting in its own right.
I spent hours— and I mean hours—down internet rabbit holes. Searching for the right organic skincare. Comparing supplements, reading conflicting advice, trying to work out what my body actually needed versus what someone was just trying to sell me. Looking up meditation techniques and mindfulness routines, watching videos, downloading apps, reading threads. Each search opened ten more tabs. Each answer raised five more questions.
I’d start an evening looking for a simple face cream and end up two hours later, bleary-eyed, more confused than when I began, with seventeen browser tabs open and nothing in my basket.
The information was everywhere. And somehow that made it harder, not easier. What I desperately wanted, and couldn’t find, was somewhere that brought it all together. Skincare I could trust. Supplements chosen with care. Guidance on slowing down and finding stillness. Everything in one place, curated with intention, so I didn’t have to keep piecing it together alone at midnight.
That place didn’t exist. So I built it.
The Overwhelm of Wellness
And yet every time I turned to the wider wellness market for support, I felt worse. The sheer volume of it. The noise. Influencers in perfect lighting telling me I needed seventeen products to be worthy of my own face. Ten-step routines presented as the minimum, as though anything less was laziness, a failure of self-discipline, a sign I wasn’t taking myself seriously enough. More products. More steps. More spending. More pressure dressed up as self-care.
It made me feel overwhelmed. And when I inevitably couldn’t keep up with it all because I had a job and a life and a perimenopause that was making everything harder, it made me feel like I was failing. At skincare. Which is, when you say it plainly, completely absurd. I didn’t want more choice. I wanted the right choice. A small, considered collection of products I could actually trust, that worked, that felt good to use, and that didn’t require a spreadsheet to manage. A place to come back to, again and again, without the overwhelm.
The Name: Graceful Rituals
Graceful is, in part, a quiet nod to my own surname; Grace. It felt personal and right, a way of putting something of myself into the brand from the very beginning. But it’s also the quality I was reaching for in those hard months. Not grace as in elegance or effortlessness; I was far from that. Grace as in acceptance. Moving through difficulty without fighting yourself. The quiet dignity of showing up for your own life, however messy and uncertain it feels.
Rituals is about something equally simple and equally important: making yourself a priority. Not occasionally. Not when everything else is done. Consistently, deliberately, as an act of self-respect.
A ritual isn’t a ten-step routine. It isn’t complicated or expensive or time-consuming. It’s a moment you choose to take. For yourself. Because you matter—not after everyone else, not as an afterthought, but genuinely, fundamentally matter.
Together, Graceful Rituals felt like exactly what I was trying to build. A brand rooted in that truth.
Our Commitment to You
Every product in our skincare collection is certified organic. Our supplements are chosen to nourish from within. And this blog, Graceful Pages, is where I’ll share the thinking behind it all. The ingredients, the rituals, the honest conversations about what it means to take care of yourself during the chapters of life that nobody warns you about.
If you’ve been feeling foggy, depleted, overwhelmed by choice, invisible, not quite like yourself, if you’ve spent your evenings lost in browser tabs trying to find answers nobody is giving you; you’re not alone.
You don’t need ten steps. You don’t need an influencer to tell you what you should want. You just need a few things that are genuinely good, a few minutes that are genuinely yours, and the quiet conviction that you are worth the effort.
Everything you need, in one place. That’s what this is.
With warmth,
Lou
